3) Right now he is doing the washing-up

4) It's very easy to make fun of it.

5) We'll have to make a decision.


The word 'make' has different meanings:

  1. To prepare.

  2. To construct.

  3. To create.

  4. To produce.


  • I can make a new desk for you. Puedo hacer un nuevo escritorio para ti.

  • This knife makes really thin slices. Este cuchillo hace rebanadas realmente finas.

  • Can you please make some coffee for me? ¿Puedes por favor prepararme un café?

  • They like making omelettes. Les gusta preparar tortillas

Extra examples with some words:

  • Make sure that this is finished on time. Asegúrate de que esto está terminado a tiempo.

  • If you want to have it finished on time, we'll have to make a great effort. Si lo quieres tenerlo terminado a tiempo, tendremos que hacer un gran esfuerzo.

  • There is no time to make a decision. No hay tiempo para tomar una decisión.

  • My children make a lot of noise. Mis hijos hacen mucho ruido.

  • We have to make a contrast. Tenemos que hacer un contraste.

  • Those words will make you angry. Aquellas palabras te harán enfadarte.

  • My dog is ill. I'll make an appointment with the vet. Mi perro está enfermo. Pediré una cita con el veterinario.

Compare active and passive sentences:

Active: They made him stay longer. Ellos le hicieron estar más tiempo.

Passive: He was made to stay longer. A él se le hizo estar más tiempo.

  2. With adverbs and pronouns. Con adverbios y pronombres. (To do well / To do so...)

  3. General activities. Actividades generales (Do exercise...)


  • The first exercise is done for you. El primer ejercicio está hecho para ti.

  • Everybody is doing their shopping now. Todo el mundo está haciendo sus comparas ahora.

  • What have you been doing? ¿Qué has estado haciendo?

  • Are you doing anything this evening? ¿Qué vas a hacer esta tarde? Literal: ¿Estás haciendo algo esta tarde?

  • I wish I didn't have so much work to do. Desearía no tener tanto trabajo que hacer.

  • I wish they would do something about it! Desearía que ellos hicieran algo sobre ello.

  • Suppose you lost your wallet. What would you do? Suponte que pierdes tu cartera. ¿Qué harías?

Extra examples with some words:

  • They always do their best. Ellos siempre hacen todo lo posible.

  • We had to do business with that company. Tuvimos que hacer negocios con aquella compañía.

  • You can't go out if you don't do your homework. No puedes salir si no haces tus deberes.
